Lake
Bohinj lies in the Triglav National Park,
named after Mt Triglav; which at 2864m is
Slovenia’s highest mountain. At a
length of 4100m, width 1200m and 45m at
its deepest point, Bohinj is the largest
and deepest lake in Slovenia. It lies wedged
in a glacial valley of the Julian Alps,
surrounded on all sides by soaring mountain
backdrops that glisten in the crisp mountain
air. The lake is a popular destination at
any time of the year. In the winter you
can ski at any of the three nearby ski resorts,
Vogel, Kobla and Soriska planina. I personally
recommend Vogel for outstanding views. More
about that below. In
the summer the Bohinj area comes alive with
all manner of activities, hiking, climbing,
water sports, to name but a few. In contrast
to the below zero temperatures in winter,
the summer temperatures usually soar to
above 30 degrees. The lake often freezes
in winter, but in summer is warm enough
to swim in. The Bohinj area is surrounded
by lots of lovely little villages and there
is no shortage of places to stay
or eat.
